What’s cool today wasn’t cool last year and most likely won’t be cool next year.  “Cool” is transitory, it comes and it goes, it’s superficial, it doesn’t’ have much depth, and it’s constantly changing.  We don’t really know what will be “cool” next year or 5 years from now.

Mom is steady, the “safe place”, nurturing, loving, never changing.  We know mom will always be there no matter what.  Mom is the bellwether that everything else is measured against.

“Cool” and mom are inherently antagonistic towards each other.  You inherently cannot be both.

So, when your kid says, “Mom, you’re not cool.”  You respond with, “You’re right.  Because what’s cool comes and goes but I will always be here for you no matter what.  And I would rather be that than cool any day of the week.”
